This easy to read 1902 publication is likely a more accurate portrayal (at least in white man's terms) of Daniel Boone and his territorial explorations than more recent accounts. It's definitely not Disneyworld's view. As I read this unusual selection for retirement-age me, I recalled the late 1950s black and white TV era of Walt Disney's historical entertainment and realized that Daniel Boone was a watered down version of the man! If you're studying early colonial history, this is a biography to include in your reading list. If you know Disney's Boone, which impressed my early layers of base knowledge more than I knew (or have previously admitted!), read this book. Find out if your memories have confused Daniel Boone as really Davy Crockett or is that the other way round or are they really two separate people from two very different periods in continental discovery and conquest. I like books that are older, for some reason I feel that they have a closer connection to what really happened and may at times not felt a need to sensor themselves , so yes it was a nice read
I can see the spirit of America in the life of this great man. It seems he was always looking for a better place for his family and that meant getting away from the throngs of people. Always willing to help others is also found here. Thus the five star rating.
Boone was a much more accomplished and traveled man than you have ever heard. Thwaites traces his entire life rather closely with tantalizing hints for the 'blank spaces'. Boone emerges as a quiet and modest man of unwavering integrity. All his life others counted on him for all manner of help. And he seems to have rarely, if ever, failed them.
This book seems to be accurate as it doesn't glorify Boone as many books do. It describes the many Indian encounters and attrocities on both sides of the fence. It is not about only Boone, but also the people he accompanied and encountered.
Having grown up idolizing Daniel Boone, as depicted by Fess Parker on TV, I had never ventured to learn of the real man till just now. So I found this to be a fascinating look into the life of this American icon. I like the old way of writing and communicating much better than that which is found in modern works. The story of the winning of the West is told from a perspective that is unsullied by the "apologism" that so odiously infects much modern discourse on the American story. If you're looking for a blow by blow description of Boone's adventures, this is not your book. The book does bring such stories as could reasonably be verified into the fold, but is primarily a history of the historical events in which Boone played a part.
This is the first book I ever read as a kid on Daniel Boone many moons ago. I probably have half a dozen books on his life and adventures now, but this is still one of m favorites. I think the reason I like it above the others is John Backless style of writing, it flows and he has a great knack of putting the story together without it becoming stilted. There are many great books out there about Daniel Boone but no matter which one you have this is a must to get in my opinion. The ones out there written in resent years have a few more updated facts, which of course is interesting to know, but this is still a great read!
Thwaite's prose may be outadated, but his work on Daniel Boone is more honest and relevant than what is found in more modern historical books. A quick read and nice overview of the great pioneer. More politically correct readers may find fault with the author's description of hostile Amerindiams as "painted savages" and "an inferior race." However, becuse PC historians are quick to condem the morals of the early European settlers like Boone for slavery and other shortcomings, it should be correct to sit back "as God on His Throne" and judge the acts of all people, Natives and Europeans, the same. Boone himself was kidnapped and enslaved by hostile Native Americans. Of course the Natives were wrong for enslaving their enemies, and "should have known better."
The book does a good job describing the events of the early frontier as two civilizations, Amerindian and the Western Europeans, fighting for the same reason to hold and gain territrory. Boone proves to be one of the most improtant men during this time.
